Lt. Governor Reminds Retail Stores To Honor Sales and Use Tax Exemption Letters

(Carson City, Nevada) – Lt. Governor Brian K. Krolicki is reminding all Nevada retail outlets that certain members of the Nevada National Guard are exempt from paying sales and use taxes while on active duty.   Working with State Department of Taxation Executive Director Dino DiCianno, Krolicki is working to spread the message across the State.

Members of the Nevada National Guard who have been called into active service, as well as select relatives during that same time period, were granted a sales and use tax exemption by the 2005 Nevada Legislature.  A signed copy of a Tax Exemption Letter, which must be obtained through the Nevada Department of Taxation, allows the holder to forego paying state taxes on purchases.

“It has recently been brought to my attention by a member of the Nevada National Guard Family Readiness Assistance Program that the Tax Exemption Letter is not being categorically honored by retail outlets in our state,” said Lt. Governor Krolicki.  “I do not believe that retail outlets are actively seeking to turn away our service members and their families, but I do believe that there is an awareness problem.”

With so many Nevada National Guard members currently deployed away from home in support of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), Krolicki believes the state must ensure that the exemption is being honored to the fullest extent.  During his tenure as Lt. Governor, Krolicki has taken an active role in advocating on behalf of current GWOT service members and its veterans.

The Department of Taxation has provided a link on its website, tax.state.nv.us, with details about the tax exemption status.  Also, in order to provide additional information about the benefits available to those who have served in the GWOT, Lt. Governor Krolicki is hosting the 2nd Annual Nevada Global War on Terrorism Veterans Conference on September 12, 2009 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.  Additional information is available at ltgov.nv.gov or calling Caleb Cage at 775-684-7122.
